CBD (cannabidiol) oil is a plant-based product, legal and freely available on the market. It is not subject to narcotics law in Europe and can be consumed safely. Cannabis products with a high THC However, (tetrahydrocannabinol) content falls under the Narcotics Act and is prohibited because intoxicating effects can occur.
The difference:
Due to its chemical composition, THC has a psychoactive effect and causes a state of intoxication.
CBD, on the other hand, acts differently on our receptors and is therefore not psychoactive.
CBD is used for increased well-being and to relieve stress.
THC and CBD should by no means be equated with each other; one must differentiate between the two.
But what does this mean in traffic and when driving?
Will I risk my driving license if I consume CBD oil?
Clear answer - NO! CBD products, i.e. cannabidiol, is a legal plant substance. It is also extracted from the cannabis plant alongside THC, but it does not have the same effect on the body. CBD, the precursor of which is CBDa contained in the cannabis plant, does not have an intoxicating effect. It does not make you "high" or lead to other effects.
CBD can be understood as an antagonist to THC.
Cannabidiol is even needed to counteract the effects of THC in the body. And what's more, CBD has calming and stress-reducing properties and is therefore used in many different ways. However, without losing control of your body, which is the case with many medications.
CBD when driving does not endanger your driver's license, whether you use CBD oil once or over a longer period of time. It also does not matter what the dosage or strength is. CBD oils have no proven side effects on the organism and therefore do not affect cognitive abilities or concentration in traffic.
Using CBD while driving
You should also know that the factual and legal situation is constantly changing in Germany and Austria. After taking the drug, many people wonder whether they are fit to drive. CBD oils also contain a certain amount of THC, which by law cannot be higher than 0.2% in Germany and 0.3% in Austria.
Every user of CBD oil also absorbs a certain amount of THC, which raises the question of whether the user is fit to drive. Therefore, you should prefer products that have the lowest possible THC content, ideally <0.1%. You should also keep the number of drops as low as possible and, if necessary, use more concentrated premium oils. The EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) recommends not exceeding a daily intake of 60 mcg THC.
Keyword drug test and CBD
Cannabis and drug test - these two terms are closely related for some because they know that a positive test can have legal consequences. Although the consumption of cannabis is not prohibited, the possession of certain products is. When you consume CBD products, you do not possess cannabis, but cannabidiol, and the all-clear can be given. Only what is being looked for can be detected. In a drug test during a traffic check, the substance THC is usually only tested for. In a urine test, which you do not always have to comply with, the CBD content consumed is not shown. Only the psychoactive THC, or THC-COOH, is tested. A pure CBD urine test therefore initially shows nothing, because the small amount of THC in the CBD product is not high enough to be detected. Therefore, the THC cannot impair the ability to drive and there is no CBD high, the psychoactive effect is absent and from a legal point of view, the intake of cannabidiol is not considered drug consumption.
Traces of THC in the CBD product?
If users now regularly consume CBD products with a THC content of less than 0.2% over a longer period of time, they will probably ask themselves whether the THC will not be detectable at some point. For many products, a low THC content is actually desirable. If you want to be on the safe side, make sure that the oil only contains a very small amount of THC (<0.1%).
But what could happen?
If you take 1,000 - 2,000 milligrams of CBD hemp oil daily (the contents of one or two full 10ml bottles), the body would accumulate between 1-2 milligrams of THC. This amount would of course have no intoxicating effects or impact on your ability to drive. A THC drug test could then fail at this point. However, no one drinks one or two bottles of CBD oil every day. Or, if you want, you can switch to a higher CBD concentration in products, where you only need fewer drops.
The most important question:
When could a drug test be positive? At 1000 and 2000 milligrams per day, if the CBD oil contains more THC. However, the test result would be a "false positive". A mass spectrometry test could then be carried out, the result of which would then be negative. These types of tests are more precise, more specific and do not detect CBD or any other cannabinoids. With the amount of THC required for an initial positive test, it is very unlikely that there would be any additional effort after the first drug test. However, if you still want to play it safe, you can simply buy products that are 100% free of THC.
CONCLUSION: Question quality assurance and content!
It is therefore very important to find out more about the product when buying CBD and to pay attention to the analysis certificates from independent laboratories. Reputable dealers only sell you tested, certified products and provide the analyses on the product or on the website.
Products from dubious dealers or cheap offers often have a higher THC content than stated. If you're unlucky, you'll end up with one that falls under the Narcotics Act because it contains more than 0.3 (Austria) or 0.2% (Germany) THC.
Road traffic abroad and CBD
These guidelines apply primarily to Austrian and German road traffic regulations. Despite the high level of awareness and acceptance of CBD products, there are still countries in which CBD products are completely unknown. Or countries in which it is not yet permitted by law. There, even a very small amount of THC in the blood can be prosecuted. That is why it is important to find out about the country's rules before traveling abroad.
